KS 2 Orienteering Competition - Navigating to silver medal success!

On 8th June, a team of six represented Gisburn at the Hyndburn & Ribble Valley Yrs. 5 & 6 District Orienteering competition.   Thirty teams from across the two districts took part in the event.  Teams were split into mixed pairs who had to navigate around a course set amongst the woods and football pitches at Wilson’s Playing Fields, Clayton.

Each pair were given the map on the starting line and had to find 17 control points and return to base within 20 minutes.  Many of the first competitors returning to base were announcing they hadn’t found all the control points and the time limit was also proving tight, so it was a tough course for all teams.

The first pair in action for Gisburn, returned in under the time limit but missed some control points.  Our second pair  missed only one control point and finished less than a minute over the time limit.  Our third pair, experienced a timing mishap, which resulted in more substantial time penalties and also missed some control points.

The combined results of both districts were revealed in reverse order and Gisburn discovered they had done exceptionally well, finishing second out of the 30 teams, and they could have qualified to represent the Ribble Valley in Blackpool if the winning team came from Hyndburn.  Unfortunately, Gisburn had been pipped at the post; we subsequently discovered we finished only four points behind the winners, with all other teams being over 25 points further behind.
